Did Scientists Create Something From Nothing?

Julian Schwinger, one of the founders of quantum field theory, predicted 70 years ago that a strong electromagnetic field could rip particles and antiparticles out of the vacuum of empty space. In January 2022, scientists verified the Schwinger effect with a simple laboratory setup using a material known as graphene. They spontaneously created particle-antiparticle pairs from the quantum vacuum of the graphene. And now, scientists say the Schwinger effect “teaches us how the Universe truly makes something from nothing.”

However, the article itself states, ironically, that you need two “somethings” to make something from nothing: 1) empty space and 2) a strong enough electromagnetic field. And the scientists who verified the Schwinger effect used several other “somethings” in their experiment, including 1) their intelligence; 2) laboratory equipment; and 3) graphene. It seems that to make “something from nothing” requires much more “something” than “nothing.” Unfortunately for the atheistic scientists, verifying the Schwinger effect does nothing to disprove that the Universe was created by an intelligence superior to ours. In fact, the experiment proves that more than nothing is needed to make something.

The Bible tells us that in the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth (Genesis 1:1). God, with His unfathomable intelligence and limitless power, truly made something out of nothing. He made the empty space and the electromagnetic fields from nothing. And He made man in His image, with the intelligence to discover these fascinating principles of quantum dynamics. Mankind, however, in its sinful nature, desires to worship the creature rather than the Creator (Romans 1:25). The god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God (2 Cor. 4:4). So they continue to believe, as the article concludes: “we really can make something from absolutely nothing!”
